Match Report – 8th May 2010
Under 9 – Blue Team
After losing the news letter from Thursday and having no idea where we were playing, I frantically called around to find out. I also believed that the game was at 9am, but it turned out to be 9:30am. Anyway after once again proving I am the most disorganised coach at Montrose I was happy to see the kids start to turn up at Croydons ground. We had a warm up and I had a team talk before the game. I asked for tackling and positions to be thought about, just like in training on Thursdays. I also asked for a volunteer for goalie and Lachlan put up his hand..well done Lachie. It was also good to have an almost full squad to choose from. The kids are really starting to learn where they work best on the pitch. I know have four good defenders, Flynn, Tom, Adam and Tyler, two good midfielders, Jacob and Patrick and two good strikers, Alex and Jasper. The kids seemed to have learned these positions, but it is difficult to keep them there when interchanging. The first half was brilliant, the kids played beyond their age group, they passed tackled and spread out, we had loads of chances to score. Croydon got lucky and managed to get one passed the safe hands of Lachie (this doesn’t happen too much) but this was against the flow of the game. Alex was chasing everything and it soon payed off with a goal thought the goalies legs. We had half time at 1 - 1. All I could do was ask for the same again, and that’s exactly what the kids gave me. Jacob after receiving a great pass slotted one in and then did a impressive after goal celebratory run. Our defence was great, Flynn has really got a grip on the center defence job, and with Adam and Tom tackling and kicking clear on either side of him it is working great. Tyler was a little hesitant at first but soon got the hang of it with a couple of great tackles. Patrick was working hard in midfield and again this soon paid off when the goalie fumbled saving his shot and he was able to pounce (you stayed on your feet Paddy!! I told you it would pay off one day) on the ball and score. Jasper was a great in either midfield or attack giving the players no time to pass. All in all a great game and too many great moments to mention. We ended up 3 - 1 which was a very well deserved win. Man of the match was Adam for keeping his position and kicking the ball clear many times.
Match Report – 1st May 2010
Saturday found the Blue under 9’s team playing at home against Boronia. I was lucky enough to have a full squad including Jacob, Alex, Jasper H, Jasper, Flynn, Pattrick, Tom, Lachlan and Adam, giving me a total of 9. I asked the Boronia coach if he wanted to play 8 a side instead of 7 as he had about 4 kids on his bench, he wanted to stay with 7...go figure?? I asked the kids if they remembered the diagram I had shown them on Thursday and if they understood the positioning, they all nodded eagerly intent on getting on with the match. We started and everything worked, they all held positions and it was a joy to watch. They pushed forward after every ball, with passing and calling for the ball. The defence held their line and didn’t chase every ball everywhere. Boronia scored a goal against the run of play, but this didn’t deter the Montrose kids, who again went at it, but a slight slip up in defence let Boronia get another goal. At halftime I praised all the kids, and Adam had requested to come out from goal, Flynn bravely put up his had to go into goal. The second half the kids forgot a lot of the positioning we had worked on but this may be due to the amount of subs I was running (It would have been nice to play 8) A great shot from Patrick (I think) got us back into the game, but again..against the play Boronia got another one 3 -1 but the Montrose kids weren’t finished yet, and Adam pushed forward and sneaked one in. We ended up with a 4 - 2 loss, but they definitely played better this week, a little more work on positioning and marking up and I may even keep my voice after the game!! Man of the match was Flynn, I give him a job and he does it...great in goal too. Coach Nick
Match Report – 24th April 2010
The team were ready to go, and we had a full squad consisting of Jacob, Alex, Adam, Jasper Hennessy, Tom, Patrick, Lachlan and Flyn. I had instructed them all on Thursday nights training on the importance of positioning. I had used more cones than you could poke a stick at..and they all seemed to get the idea. So we were playing at Ringwood, on a lovely day, I soon sorted out the positions and we kicked off, the kids held their positions well and all seemed to move up and back with the movement of the ball. I asked Tom to go in goal which he did and I explained the rules of being a goalie, I was unhappy to lose my usual central defender, but I haven’t yet found a permanent goalie. Flynn and Patrick were really giving the opposition some problems with their speed and tackling, Alex was (as usual) very quick and a perfect forward chasing everything that came near...and far from him. Jasper and Adam in defence worked very well and held off most of the attacks. It was good to see the kids tackling and moving the ball well through the midfield. I am not sure what the score was at halftime but I wasn’t worried about it. I asked all the kids to keep up the good work and not worry about the score. They lined up again for the second half and at the start of the half we had some great chances, a good run by Lachlan down the wing was a real chance, followed by a cracking shot from Jacob that just missed the to left corner of the goal. All these chances came from the kids passing and moving. Adam did some great goal kicks which really put the pressure on the other team. When the kids move wide for the goal kicks it really help the team, also they weren’t used to the throw ins, which we hadn’t practiced. All in all it was a good day and a good match to watch. We will be working on positions again on Thursday and ‘marking up’ which are the two areas that are letting us down. Man of the match was Tom when he was in goal, a brave attempt and passion showed.
